We offer tours to Shell Key preserve by boat, clear kayak, or coastal kayak. Take a boat for snorkeling, or a kayak tour to explore mangrove tunnels and get up and close to wildlife.

Island Ferry's tours to Shell Key takes you on a fascinating tour into the 1800 acre Shell Key Preserve and its incredible wildlife! We offer these tours by boat, or on our Clear or Coastal kayaks. It's a wonderful way to see dolphins, manatees, rays, and wild shorebirds in their natural habitat (sightings are season dependent). From our boats, you get to swim and snorkel the waters of Shell Key island (we provide the snorkel gear, and floating noodles). From either the boat or kayak tours, you can also go shelling on the island, where you'll find hermit crabs, conchs, rays, horseshoe crabs, and more. ​Shell Key has so much to offer and Island Ferry has multiple options to get you there.

Boat Tours - $54 per person; Clear Kayak Tours - $59 pp; Coastal Kayak Tours - $54 pp; Paddleboards - $49 pp

Whether you choose the boat, kayak, or paddleboards, these tours take you to visit the unspoiled beaches of Shell Key. The shells there are magnificent, and include cockle and scallop shells, whelks, conchs, and many more. Even while you're on the Shell Key beach you're likely to see dolphins from shore. We make sure all boat tours and kayak tours are semi-private small groups, so we keep a high level of customer service and engagement. Our boats never carry more than 6 passengers each. Our Clear kayaks offer a see-through experience and a fascinating way to see the wildlife and eco-system of the Shell Key Preserve and its beautiful mangrove tunnels. Our Coastal kayaks offer a traditional kayaking experience through the Shell Key preserve.

Boat Tour Includes

  • Instruction on kayaking and paddling.

  • FREE parking at the launch location.

Details

  • Leaves 7 days a week, departures vary by season. 

  • Bring your swimsuit and towel.

  • Trip duration is 2 hours for boats, 2-1/2 to 3 hours for kayaks.

  • Boats are $54 per person (all ages including children).

  • Kayaks are $59 per person.

  • Our boat rides are semi-private, never more than 6 passengers on the boat.

  • You can purchase tickets online or by phone!

  • Cancellations: No refunds for cancellations less than 48 hours before your scheduled departure. No refunds for "no shows".  We give FULL refunds if Island Ferry cancels for inclement weather.
